The painting here depicts Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune, and prosperity who along with Parvati and Saraswati, forms Tridevi, the holy trinity. She is shown here sitting on a lotus pedestal, a symbol of affluence, self-knowledge, and spiritual liberation. Against the lotus, she is holding a sapling, personifying fertility and growth. She is in the company of tortoises and fish adding more life on the canvas. Tortoise or the ‘Kurma’ is the second Avatar or incarnation of Lord Vishnu, whose better half is Goddess Lakshmi. The belief, which has been carried over by centuries that tortoise attracts harmony, money, peace, and long life in a home.
